40's Fashion, Dior never befor seen photos of the "New Look"

Check out the link to see some great photos of the birth of Dior's "New Look." This new look featured a nipped in waist on coats/tops and a full skirt falling just below the mid calf. Number 9 is my favorite, a group of young women crowded around an older Mr. Dior giving him "thank you" kisses on the cheek...I would too :)

This second link is to "Voguepedia" or a fashion dictionary by non other than Vogue. It gives a wonderful description of the style, how it emerged and social conditions around it. In some regards the style was quite controversial. History and fashion go hand in hand.

My inspiration

Redheaded, lefty, farm kid, fashionista, nerd, 100% my own person.

This is a simply a spot to collect and preserve my fashion ideas, creations and likes. History, Anthropology and art history are some of the things I study in school, have professional interest in and find inspiration. Thus, much of the historical or cultural facts I share around the context of clothing are things I have had the pleasure to learn through my time as a student, reading, meeting new people and traveling.

Fashion is art and a form of expression. Clothes have the ability to speak volumes about one’s identity, nationality, culture, religious beliefs, personal likes and dislikes, ideals and time period in which they live or lived in. In the words of Neil Macgregor the director of the British Museum: "Looking at clothes, is a key part in any serious study of history...and fashion is a great way to grasp how a society thinks about itself" In this way, clothes state as much of what we think in silence; as we say we think aloud. In 5 years or 500 a simple a or description of a garment can inform the viewer of this historical information. And all without words.
